Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp)

2,100M → 2,650M

Depart Arusha or Moshi for the scenic drive to Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro's western flank for registration. From the trailhead, begin a peaceful hike winding through pristine, moss-draped montane rainforest. Keep a keen eye out for black-and-white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys before reaching Mti Mkubwa for dinner and overnight rest.

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

2,650M → 3,610M

Leave the rainforest canopy behind as the trail steepens into the heather and moorland zones. Ascend out of the cloud layer onto the eastern rim of the sprawling volcanic Shira Plateau. Enjoy your first awe-inspiring panoramic vistas of Kibo's glaciated summit across the open moorland.

Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

3,610M → 3,850M

A gentle, unhurried traverse across the volcanic plateau toward Shira 2 Camp. This day is intentionally designed with moderate elevation gain to help your body adapt naturally to high altitude. Relax at camp with spectacular golden-hour views of Mount Meru rising above the western clouds.

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

Day 4: Shira 2 to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

3,850M → 4,630M → 3,960M

A cornerstone acclimatisation day using the vital 'climb high, sleep low' methodology. Ascend across alpine desert terrain up to the dramatic volcanic plug of Lava Tower (4,630m) for hot lunch. Afterwards, descend into the sheltered, surreal Barranco Valley surrounded by giant senecio trees.

Hiking Time: 6–7 Hours

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

3,960M → 4,035M

Start the morning with an exhilarating scramble up the iconic Barranco Wall. Though steep, it is non-technical and offers tremendous fun with breathtaking viewpoints over the southern glaciers. Continue over rolling alpine ridges down into the Karanga Valley for hot lunch and afternoon rest.

Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Base Camp

4,035M → 4,640M

Steadily climb along the desolate alpine desert ridge connecting to Barafu Camp. Settle in, complete afternoon oximeter health checks, hydrate thoroughly, and eat an early warm dinner before retiring to sleep by 19:00 in preparation for midnight summit departure.

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

Day 7: Summit Night: Barafu to Uhuru Peak, Down to Mweka Camp

4,640M → 5,895M → 3,100M

Awake at 23:30 for hot tea and biscuits before beginning the midnight push. Ascend steep scree switchbacks by headlamp to Stella Point (5,756m) at dawn. Continue along the glaciated crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—Africa's highest summit! After celebrating, descend back to Barafu for brunch and continue down to Mweka Camp.

Hiking Time: 11–14 Hours total

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

3,100M → 1,640M

A celebratory final descent through the lush lower rainforest down to Mweka Gate. Receive your official gold Kilimanjaro summit certificates, celebrate with the mountain crew's traditional Kilimanjaro farewell song, and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
