Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Huts

1,870M → 2,720M

Following private pickup from your hotel, drive through Chagga coffee villages to Marangu Gate. Register with park rangers before beginning a pleasant hike along well-maintained trails through the moss-draped montane rainforest. In the afternoon, settle into your wooden A-frame cabins at Mandara Huts, with an optional 15-minute excursion to the volcanic Maundi Crater rim.

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

Day 2: Mandara Huts to Horombo Huts

2,720M → 3,720M

Leave the rainforest canopy behind as the vegetation shifts into giant heather and expansive moorlands. Ascend over rolling hills with opening views of Mawenzi’s jagged peaks and Kibo’s icy summit dome. Arrive at Horombo Huts for a hot chef-prepared dinner and overnight rest.

Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours

Day 3: Acclimatisation Hike at Horombo Huts

3,720M → 4,020M → 3,720M

A vital extra day that drastically increases your summit success probability. Embark on an active acclimatisation morning hike toward Zebra Rocks (4,020m) underneath Mawenzi Peak. Return to Horombo Huts for hot lunch, afternoon hydration, and an early evening rest.

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours (Acclimatisation Walk)

Day 4: Horombo Huts to Kibo Huts

3,720M → 4,720M

Pass the last water stream and step into the barren alpine desert expanse known as "The Saddle," which connects the volcanic peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. Arrive at the stone-built Kibo Huts by early afternoon. Eat an early dinner, perform evening oxygen checks, and retire to bed early ahead of midnight departure.

Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours

Day 5: Summit Night: Kibo to Uhuru Peak, Down to Horombo Huts

4,720M → 5,895M → 3,720M

Wake up at 23:30 for hot tea and begin ascending loose volcanic scree paths by headlamp. Reach Gilman's Point (5,685m) on the crater rim at sunrise as the sky turns crimson over Mawenzi. Push along the glaciated rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Celebrate at Africa's highest summit before descending back to Kibo Huts for a short rest and continuing down to Horombo Huts.

Hiking Time: 11–13 Hours total

Day 6: Horombo Huts to Marangu Gate

3,720M → 1,870M
