Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp)

2,100M → 2,650M

Following hotel pickup in Arusha or Moshi, drive to Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro's western flank to complete registration formalities. Begin your introductory trek through dense, moss-draped montane rainforest. Keep an eye out for black-and-white colobus monkeys in the canopy before settling into Mti Mkubwa for dinner and rest.

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

2,650M → 3,610M

Climb out of the rainforest canopy onto the expansive volcanic Shira Plateau. The landscape opens into sweeping heather and moorland zones, revealing your first clear views of Kibo Peak across the open plain.

Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

3,610M → 3,850M

A gentle, unhurried traverse across the volcanic plateau toward Shira 2 Camp. The moderate elevation gain allows your body to adjust naturally to the altitude while you enjoy panoramic views of Mount Meru rising above the western clouds.

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Moir Hut

3,850M → 4,630M → 4,200M

Ascend across alpine desert terrain up to the landmark Lava Tower (4,630m) for an acclimatisation lunch. Instead of dropping into the crowded Barranco Valley, turn north into the quiet Lent Hills to camp at the secluded Moir Hut.

Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours

Day 5: Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp

4,200M → 4,020M

Begin with a moderately steep climb out of Moir Valley, followed by a trek across the northern circuit traverse. This remote stretch provides breathtaking vistas looking across the Kenyan border plains, with virtually no other climbing groups on the trail.

Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours

Day 6: Buffalo Camp to Third Cave

4,020M → 3,870M

Traverse quiet valleys and rolling alpine desert ridges around the northern slopes of Kibo Peak. Arrive early at Third Cave to rest, hydrate, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of Kilimanjaro’s least-traveled flank.

Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours

Day 7: Third Cave to School Hut

3,870M → 4,800M

Ascend steadily through the alpine desert saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, arriving at School Hut by early afternoon. Complete health checks, hydrate, take a hearty early dinner, and rest before the midnight summit push.

Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours

Day 8: Summit Push: School Hut to Uhuru Peak, Down to Mweka Camp

4,800M → 5,895M → 3,100M

Begin the midnight push by headlamp up steep scree paths to Gilman's Point (5,685m) on the crater rim at sunrise. Follow the glaciated rim past Stella Point to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Celebrate on Africa’s roof before descending back to Barafu for brunch and onward down to Mweka Camp.

Hiking Time: 11–14 Hours total

Day 9: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

3,100M → 1,640M

A celebratory final descent through the lush montane forest back to Mweka Gate. Receive your official gold Mount Kilimanjaro summit certificates, celebrate with the mountain crew's farewell songs, and transfer back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi.

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
