Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

1,800M → 2,835M

Following hotel pickup and registration at Machame Gate, begin a steady upward hike through lush montane rainforest. Mist drapes through towering ficus trees and giant ferns. Listen for calls of turacos and black-and-white colobus monkeys before arriving at Machame Camp for a warm dinner.

Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp

2,835M → 3,850M

Leave the rainforest behind, emerging into moorlands filled with giant heather. Climb over rocky volcanic ridges and cross the eastern rim of the ancient Shira Plateau. Enjoy stunning views across the plains towards Mount Meru before resting at Shira 2 Camp.

Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours

Day 3: Shira 2 to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

3,850M → 4,600M → 3,900M

A classic 'climb high, sleep low' day fundamental for bodily acclimatisation. Ascend through alpine desert terrain to the foot of Lava Tower (4,600m) for hot lunch. Later, descend into the sheltered Barranco Valley surrounded by giant groundsel trees.

Hiking Time: 6–7 Hours

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

3,900M → 3,995M

Conquer the famous Barranco Wall—a non-technical, fun hand-over-foot scramble with stunning panoramic views of the southern glaciers. Afterwards, traverse several scenic ridges and gullies down into the Karanga Valley for hot lunch and afternoon rest.

Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Base Camp

3,995M → 4,673M

Ascend across alpine desert trails to reach Barafu Base Camp along a windswept volcanic ridge. Complete your afternoon medical evaluation, hydrate, enjoy an early hot dinner, and rest before the midnight summit push.

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

Day 6: Summit Night: Barafu to Uhuru Peak, Down to Mweka Camp

4,673M → 5,895M → 3,100M

Begin your summit push around midnight by headlamp. Climb steep scree switchbacks to Stella Point (5,756m) at sunrise. Make the final push along the glaciated crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Celebrate on Africa's highest summit before descending back to Barafu for brunch and onward down to Mweka Camp.

Hiking Time: 11–14 Hours total

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

3,100M → 1,640M

Descend gently through the lush montane forest to Mweka Gate. Say goodbye to your mountain crew with traditional songs, receive your official gold summit certificates, and take your private vehicle transfer back to your hotel.

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
