Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

1,950M → 2,600M

Following a scenic morning drive across the Tanzanian countryside towards the Kenyan border, complete national park registration formalities at Rongai Gate. Set out on an unhurried trail winding past pine plantations and indigenous forest. Look for blue monkeys and colobus monkeys swinging overhead before reaching Simba Camp for a hot meal and overnight rest.

Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave

2,600M → 3,450M

Ascend steadily out of the forest zone into the heather and open moorland. The air becomes crisp and dry, offering sweeping panoramic vistas looking northwards across the Kenyan plains. Arrive early at Second Cave for hot lunch and an acclimatisation walk in the afternoon.

Day 3: Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp

3,450M → 3,600M

Traverse across scenic rolling moorland ridges towards the dramatic jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak. The trail is tranquil and uncrowded. Arrive at Kikelewa Camp tucked into a sheltered valley near giant senecios with remarkable views of both Kibo and Mawenzi.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Hut Camp

3,600M → 4,330M

A short but steep climb up grassy slopes leading into the alpine desert zone. Settle into camp beneath the soaring rock towers of Mawenzi Peak, situated beside a natural alpine tarn (lake). The afternoon is reserved for rest, altitude adaptation, and photography.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Base Camp

4,330M → 4,700M

Cross the lunar expanse known as "The Saddle," an expansive alpine desert plain separating Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive at Kibo Camp by early afternoon. Complete health checks, hydrate, take a hearty dinner, and rest ahead of the midnight summit push.

Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours

Day 6: Summit Push: Kibo to Uhuru Peak, Down to Horombo Huts

4,700M → 5,895M → 3,720M

Depart at midnight climbing rocky switchbacks to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim at sunrise. Continue along the glaciated rim past Stella Point to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Celebrate on Africa’s roof before descending back to Kibo for brunch, then continue down to Horombo Huts for a restful night.

Hiking Time: 11–13 Hours total

Day 7: Horombo Huts to Marangu Gate

3,720M → 1,870M

Complete your descent through the moorland and lush tropical rainforest to Marangu Gate. Say goodbye to your mountain crew with traditional celebrations, receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificates, and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
