Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

1,600M → 2,850M

Following hotel pickup in Moshi or Arusha, drive to Umbwe Gate for national park registration. Unlike other routes, Umbwe gains elevation abruptly from the first step. Ascend a narrow, winding ridge flanked by dense, moss-draped montane rainforest and ancient tree roots. Arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp nestled beneath towering canopies for dinner and overnight rest.

Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours

Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp

2,850M → 3,950M

Leave the dense tree line as the terrain transitions sharply into exposed heather and rocky volcanic ridges. Climb along a breathtaking knife-edge ridge with sheer drop-offs into deep river valleys on either side. Take in magnificent vistas of Kibo’s southern glaciers before descending into the sheltered Barranco Valley to camp among giant senecios.

Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours

Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

3,950M → 4,035M

Begin the morning with an exhilarating scramble up the famed Barranco Wall. Though steep, it is non-technical, secure, and rewarding with sensational glacier panoramas. Continue across rolling alpine ridges and cross the Karanga River gully to reach Karanga Camp for hot lunch, health monitoring, and an afternoon acclimatisation rest.

Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours

Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Base Camp

4,035M → 4,640M

Ascend across barren alpine desert slopes along the southern circuit towards Barafu Camp. Positioned on an exposed, wind-carved ridge, Barafu serves as your summit launchpad. Complete afternoon pulse-oximeter health checks, hydrate thoroughly, enjoy an early warm dinner, and rest before the midnight summit push.

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

Day 5: Summit Push: Barafu to Uhuru Peak, Down to Mweka Camp

4,640M → 5,895M → 3,100M

Wake at 23:30 for hot tea and light snacks before setting out by headlamp. Ascend steep scree switchbacks between Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers toward Stella Point (5,756m) at sunrise. Follow the glaciated crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Celebrate on Africa’s roof before descending back to Barafu for brunch and continuing down to Mweka Camp.

Hiking Time: 11–14 Hours total

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

3,100M → 1,640M

Enjoy a final gentle descent through the lush tropical rainforest down to Mweka Gate. Receive your official gold Mount Kilimanjaro summit certificates, celebrate with your crew's farewell song, and board your private transfer back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi.

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
